The story so far...
Mechanical Owl started life in Leeds in the late 2000s as a lo-fi indie recording experiment. The debut Snowdonia EP, written and played entirely by Mike Payne, and inspired by Broken Social Scene, Why?, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, CTFTPA and Death Cab for Cutie, picked up national radio support and led to shows ranging from solo laptop sets to full-band performances across UK cities and festivals.
Early recordings caught the ear of Steve Lamacq, Adam Walton and Bethan Elfyn, with sessions recorded for BBC Radio Wales. A more ambitious, self-produced debut album, Winter Songs, followed in 2015 to a strong indie-press reception and a number five placing in MiMR’s Top 100 Albums of the year.
After stepping back in the mid-2010s to focus on family and a Computer Science Masters, Mike kept writing and releasing music through projects including Sightseers, TMOTMO, M.J.Payne and Half Avian. Four new Mechanical Owl singles arrived in November 2024, and FOCUS Wales 2026 in Wrexham marked the first show in over two years, a new line-up, new material, and some of the old songs.
